The city is home to an estimated population of 159,000 veterans and more than 80,000 active-duty military service members out of the 1,434,625 total residents. Veterans comprise 11 percent of the total population within the

Understanding Veterans Disability Benefits:

Are you a United States military Veteran? Is your quality of life hampered by poor mental or physical health? If so, you may be eligible for disability compensation from the VA, so stick with us. The VA defines a service-connected disability as a “disability that was incurred or aggravated during active military service,” so it’s important to know whether your own health struggles can be categorized as such. If that answer is yes, the next step is convincing the VA to view your condition as service connected.

Any illness or other conditions sustained during–or as a result of–your military service, would be classified as “service-connected.” If your initial claim is accepted, the amount awarded will depend on the extent of your disability. The VA assigns disability ratings on a scale from 0 to 100 percent, progressing in increments of 10 percent. The more severe the disability, the higher the disability rating– which ultimately means a higher sum of compensation per month. Nearly a third of all American Veterans deal with service-related disabilities, so rest assured that you are not alone.

It takes true courage to acknowledge when you need a helping hand.
